Escape (page 2)

It had been several hours of quiet reflection, broken intermittently by sudden outbursts of colorful diatribe on everything from umron (in Herglic slang, someone so stupid he doesn't know he's an idiot) crewmembers, meticulously arranged plans that had gone dreadfully wrong, untrustworthy alliances and how much credits Hamar stood to loose. Valka had stood stoically off to one side the entire time, not saying anything. Finally, he ventured forth with a comment, "You may want to consider some other concerns, boss, other than just the loss of the money"

"What do you mean?" Hamar inquired, looking at Valka threatingly, suddenly very interested in what he had to say.

Valka didn't hesitate, "I am referring to the crew and the mercenaries you hired for this job." Valka paused long enough for the idea to begin to sink in and continued, "What if some of them survived the attack and tell those Rebel scum what the plan you had in mind was? Wouldn't that make it uncomfortable for you to do business?"

Appearing to relax a little more, Hamar replied with a dismissing wave of his hand, "Oh, I'm not worried about that. The crew of the freighter had no idea of what was going to happen, so they aren't much of a liability. On the other hand, I possibly could worry about the mercenaries, other than the fact that they were paid handsomely for their part in this job. Only if those pisons were able to scrape up enough credits to trump my payment would the mercenaries possibly change sides. Even then, only a very foolish mercenary would consider changing allegience knowing that I have much more influence in the Tapani Sector as opposed to those Rebel scum. Besides, what would the rebel trash do with that kind of information anyway?" Hamar laughed at his private joke, "Report it to the local ISB?"

A beep from the communications console interrupted the conversation. "Yes." Hamar barked into the comlink.

"We believe, sir, that we have the location of the Theta-2Y." Tinlan said. "She's been jumping around for awhile now, but she appears to have stopped, possibly to try and make repairs."

"Good." Hamar replied, "prepare to make the jump. Valka and I will be returning to the bridge. I want to get my property back, Tinlan."
